Process Improvement

Process Improvement Tools We Use:

A process of measuring the performance of a company’s products, services, or processes against those of another business considered to be the best in the industry.

A set of management tools and techniques designed to improve the capability of the business process by reducing the likelihood of error. Six Sigma is a data-driven approach that uses a statistical methodology for eliminating defects, defect reduction, and profit improvement.

Involves identifying the 8 types of waste within a process such as defects, overproduction, waiting, non-utilized talent, transportation, inventory, motion, and extra processing.

An acronym that stands for Suppliers,Inputs,Processes,Outputs, and Customer. A high level process map tool used to document a process from beginning to end prior to implementation that includes the inputs and outputs of one or more processes in table form.

Established frequency of walkthrough from all levels of management of where “the actual work” is being done to ask questions, review metrics and identify opportunities of improvement.

Is a continuous loop of planning, doing, checking, and acting. It provides a simple and effective approach for solving problems and managing change.

A tool used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization’s existing processes that are complex or risks are high.It represents the five phases that make up a process: Define the problem, improvement activity, opportunity for improvement, the project goals, and customer requirements.

A technique used to discover root causes of problems in order to identify appropriate solutions. “Treat the condition, not the symptoms”

A visual guide used to analyze, design, and manage the flow of information or materials to optimize the entire process.

A performance indicator is a type of quantifiable measurement to evaluate against performance targets.

A team approach to improve a particular process to gain steady incremental improvements to quality and performance.

A bottleneck analysis can help in identifying the exact point along the workflow that is causing these blockages, and work to mitigate them.

A principle of producing only what the customer wants, in the quality required, when they want it, and where they want it, without delays or waste.

A measurement of  processes’ overall availability, performance and quality used to direct problem solving initiatives.

The implementation of fail-safe mechanisms to prevent a process from producing errors/defects.

A method to signal production of products,  purchase of supplies, and control the amount of work in progress/inventory.

  • Documented processes that are controlled to ensure performance and outcomes are consistent to reduce variability

Sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain – organizations create a clean, well-ordered, and disciplined work environment. Many companies implement only the first three steps, hoping the last two will automatically follow.

A system that aims to promote and sustain a high level of productivity and safety throughout a workspace., 5S, each of which focuses on different areas of improvement and uses different methods to achieve the best results.

An approach of having processes in place for your equipment and machines that seek to prevent any issues from occurring that causes downtime.

Is a form of communication. The goal of visual management is to translate processes statuses into easy-to-understand visual overviews

Seeks to place all of the required processes and tools within one working cell dedicated to a single product that can produce those products in a smooth flow from start to finish.

A technique that involves leveling and smoothing the volume of work to be done in order to minimize the chance of overburden. It focuses on the process running smoothly, consistently, and efficiently.

A measurement of observed time and motion of a task/operation to define baseline and analyze data to define how long a task takes to complete, where is most of the time spent and is the time spent efficiently.

It includes all measures to minimize the time taken to produce a product, provide a service, or complete a series of tasks to be able to meet or exceed the customers expectations.

Simple way of protecting your business/organization from delivering products or services of low quality or defects to your customers while meeting and or exceeding productivity.

Is the practice of training your people to work in several different roles, or training them to do tasks that lie outside their normal responsibilities create workforce sustainability and improves productivity and efficiency.

Is the act of capturing or documenting all of the steps in a particular task. Documenting processes during execution enables employees to learn by doing, providing operational agility, gleaning insight from both mistakes and successes to refine processes.

SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. • Specific – Objective clearly states, so anyone reading it can understand what will be done. and who will do it.

Is a structured problem-solving and continuous-improvement approach to provide a simple and strict procedure that guides problem solving by workers.

The ideal process is one in which product flows one at a time from one step of the process to the next efficiently without delays or stock of inventory between operations.

Is a structured methodology and technique used to reduce the combined amount of Set-up and Start-up time it takes to change a process from providing or providing to the next, producing one product  or service to the next.

Is a short document used in project planning to outline the key aims and benefits of a project. It’s an at-a-glance guide to why a project is taking place

Can be established through the collection and analysis of relevant data and used to determine a program’s progress toward reaching its objectives, as well as to guide management decisions
